Intel’s long awaited Core i9-13900KS was unwrapped Thursday morning and will officially be the first x86 consumer CPU to hit the 6GHz barrier. You will pay a premium for the barrier-breaking privilege, as the chip will cost $699 when it goes on sale today.
The 24-core Core i9-113900KS is essentially a special edition version of the already released (and unapologetically fast) Core i9-13900K. It features eight performance cores and 16 efficiency cores.
The original Core i9-13900K could reach 5.8GHz on single-core loads, while the Core i9-13900KS will round that up to a smooth 6.0GHz on single-core loads.
For much of computing history, increasing clock speed has been pretty easy, but the mid-2000s brought an end to that. It’s been progressively harder and harder ever since to increase the clock speed on CPUs and other processors.
The world’s first 5GHz CPU launched in 2013 and at the end of 2022, the fastest CPU had a boost frequency of 5.8GHz. But finally, Intel has broken the 6GHz barrier with the launch of its Core i9-13900KS, which is available at retail today.
Other than the power and turbo frequencies, the 13900KS is almost identical to the 13900K. The performance core base frequencies have been bumped up to 3.2GHz, up from the 3GHz on the 13900K.
But it has the same 24 cores (eight performance and 16 efficiency cores), 32 threads, 36MB of Intel Smart Cache, and 20 PCIe lanes (16 PCIe 5 and four PCIe 4 lanes).
Z790 and Z690 motherboards will support the 13900KS with a BIOS update, and retailers will start stocking the CPU boxed on shelves today and inside OEM systems, too. The recommended starting price is $699.
Intel’s latest CPU arrives just weeks before AMD launches its Ryzen 7000 X3D CPUs. AMD claims its flagship Ryzen 9 7950X3D chip will be the “ultimate processor for gamers and creators,” with promises of between 15 and 25 percent better performance in games that are CPU bound at 1080p.
New Core i9-13900KS has 24 cores, of which 8 are performance and 16 are efficiency cores. And it is packed with 32 threads, 36MB of Intel Smart Cache, and 20 PCIe lanes (16 PCIe 5 and four PCIe 4 lanes).
An increase in power consumption has also helped to enhance its performance as it requires 150 watts power supply, and Core i9-13900K’s requirement was 125 watts.
This processor will be supported on Z790 and Z690 motherboards. Also, it will be available to buy in online stores, as well as in offline stores, from today, and it will cost $699.
With a little bit of refinement on the 10nm node, a refreshed architecture, and some strategic binning to capture the highest quality chips, Intel was able to hit 6GHz on the 13900KS. Of course, 6GHz is not for free on the 13900KS as it consumes up to 253 watts.
As a product, the Core i9-13900KS has its strengths and weaknesses; it’s the fastest CPU you can buy and hits 6GHz, but costs $700 and consumes tons of power. However, it has achieved a very notable milestone and will always be remembered as the world’s first 6GHz CPU.
