Apple to start making its own custom screens for iPhone and Apple Watch, ditching partners like Samsung. Apple is aiming to start using its own screens for the iPhone and Apple Watch. The transition is expected to begin with the version of the Apple Watch Ultra released in 2024, the report says.

As part of Apple’s custom display plan, the company would be making microLED screens in order to upgrade the current OLED screens used in the highest-end Apple Watches by the end of 2024. Eventually, Apple would bring microLED to the iPhone and other devices, according to the report.

The move to bring display making in-house would be consistent with Apple’s recent efforts to reduce reliance on third-party suppliers for key components, such as its shift away from Intel to its own silicon for Macs.

Apple to start making its own custom screens for iPhone and Apple Watch, ditching partners like Samsung

Currently, Apple relies on partners such as Samsung and LG for displays that it uses in the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. The company’s move to start using its own custom displays in mobile devices represents a major “blow” to these partners.

According to Bloomberg, Apple ramped up its efforts to switch to micro-LED in 2018, with a goal of releasing its first product by early 2020. The project, however, “languished due to high costs and technical challenges.” Because of this, it’s possible that the 2024 target outlined today “could slip until 2025.”

The company aims to begin by swapping out the display in the highest-end Apple Watches by the end of next year, the report added.

The screens upgrade the current OLED — organic light-emitting diode — standard to a technology called microLED, and Apple plans to eventually bring the displays to other devices, including the iPhone.

This comes after Apple dropped Intel Corp. chips in its Mac computers in favor of in-house designs and plans to do the same with the key wireless components in its iPhones.

Apple will still rely on an outside supplier to handle mass production of these displays, but it has “designed the new displays and devised their manufacturing process” entirely in-house.

The move comes as Apple is also planning to drop other partners such as Qualcomm and Broadcom for cellular modems, Bluetooth chips, and Wi-Fi chips. The company also, of course, moved from Intel processors to its own Apple Silicon processors for the Mac starting in 2020.

  • Under-display Face ID again rumored for iPhone 16 Pro models

Under-display Face ID again rumored for iPhone 16 Pro models

Name of Post: KVS Various Post Apply Online
    Post Date / Update: 11 Jan| 10:23 AM
    Short Information :

Apple introduced a new pill-shaped cutout on the iPhone 14 Pro models, getting rid of the notch at the top which has been a familiar sight for the past several generations. The Cupertino company calls it Dynamic Island and rumors suggest it will expand to all four iPhone 15 models this year.

Apple could finally bring under-display Face ID to the iPhone 16 Pro. According to a report from the Korean outlet The Elec (via MacRumors), the technology used for Face ID will live directly under the screen, blending in with the rest of the display once it’s turned on and revealing only the cutout for the front-facing camera.

While rumors about the under-display tech first emerged last year, this never ended up panning out on the iPhone 14 Pro, and the iPhone 15 isn’t expected to come with it, either. The Elec’s reporting tracks with predictions from supply chain analyst Ross Young, who tweeted last year that he expects the iPhone 16 Pro to come with under-display Face ID.

The Elec report acknowledges the earlier claims that an “underpanel” Face ID could be used in the iPhone 15 range, but says “it seems difficult at the moment.”

Instead, the publication claims that the iPhone 16 Pro will gain the feature and leave only the camera visible on the front of the display. It will “then sequentially adopt an underpanel camera (UPC),” too.

    Background

It seems hard to imagine now, but Touch ID was a big deal when it was first introduced in the iPhone 5S. Apple wasn’t the first to include a fingerprint sensor, but it was far more sophisticated than most, and integrated neatly into the Home button.

Time moved on, however, and the large chin space needed for the Home button became a liability. With the iPhone X, Apple moved instead to Face ID, enabling a whole new design far closer to the long-term vision of the iPhone as “a single slab of glass.”

Under-display Face ID again rumored for iPhone 16 Pro models

But Face ID brought its own problems. Apple initially embedded the necessary tech into the infamous “notch.” While many of us found this quickly faded from view in use, and it even became something of an Apple design emblem, others disliked the quirky cutout.

With the iPhone 14 lineup, the notch was relegated to the base models, with the Pro models getting a new design based on “hole-punch and pill” cutouts. Apple disguised these separate cutouts with a clever piece of UI – the Dynamic Island – which not only made them seem like a single slot, but where the slot took on a life of its own.

While many of us positively like the UI, not everyone has been immediately sold on it. Either way, it’s clear that Apple is currently making a virtue out of a necessity, and that this isn’t the end of the in-display tech journey.

As per the reports, Apple will introduce the under-display Face ID sensors with the iPhone 16 Pro models in 2024. However, the non-Pro models will feature the same pill+hole shaped cutouts for the Dynamic Island as the iPhone 14 Pro. The company will drop the design the following year and offer the new under-display Face ID sensors and a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera on all 2025 iPhones.

The report adds that the new under-display Face ID sensors on the iPhone 16 Pro will only be visible when used. The implementation will likely work like the under-display camera offerings we’ve seen on a few Android smartphones of late, which reveals the camera only when it’s in use.

Given that the phones will still have a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera, they won’t suffer from the same image-quality issues we’ve seen on phones like the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra and the Xiaomi Mi MIX 4.

    Under-display Face ID

The next step in iPhone biometrics would be to embed them beneath the screen, losing the need for either a notch or a pill-shaped slot.

Apple has patents for both under-display Touch ID and under-display Face ID, and at this stage it could still go in either direction. Each form of biometrics has its fans, and some even hope that Apple will incorporate both – though this would be extremely unlikely, given the cost.

Under-display Face ID again rumored for iPhone 16 Pro models

The publication says the front-facing camera hole will remain on the iPhone 16 Pro, but the display area and immersive experience will improve overall. In addition, it confirms that the display cutouts for this year’s iPhone 15 Pro will be the same as the iPhone 14 Pro as the under-display Face ID is not ready yet.

Further, the report adds Apple will adopt an under-panel camera (UPC) sequentially after applying under-panel Face ID to the front of the iPhone. UPC will still have a front camera module mounted under the display but when not in use, the camera lens hole will not be visible. The application principle of under-panel face ID and UPC will apparently be the same.

What is under display Face ID?

According to a report from the Korean outlet The Elec (via MacRumors), the technology used for Face ID will live directly under the screen, blending in with the rest of the display once it’s turned on and revealing only the cutout for the front-facing camera.
