The Amazing Spider-Man #15, Kraven the Hunter surely stood out but did not make the same impression on readers as previous villains. A human “big game hunter” in peak physical shape, Kraven’s access to obscure poisons, herbs, and guns were the assets that gave him an edge over his greatest challenge yet… Spider-Man.
While Spidey foes like Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and the Lizard quickly soared to new heights, Kraven was largely more of an inconvenience than a serious obstacle. Even the Ultimate Universe interpretation of Kraven managed to poke fun at the fact that without powers, Kraven poses little to no serious threat to the wall-crawler.
It was not until 1987’s Kraven’s Last Hunt from J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck that Kraven became an enemy who could go toe to toe with Marvel’s finest. Upon the character’s resurrection from the dead, Kraven the Hunter has been given a new lease on life that finally positions the character alongside the likes of Spider-Man’s greatest villains.

As production continues on Madame Web, the first character details for Sony Pictures’ next Marvel film have reportedly been confirmed by Cosmic Circus (via MSS Reddit).

Dakota Johnson confirms her Madame Web casting for Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff movie in a new social media post. Sony has been building its own Marvel shared universe for the last few years. This effort took off when Venom became a surprise box office hit in 2018, which led to Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Jared Leto’s Morbius, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter entering development.
Sony also started looking into its library of Marvel characters for other heroes and villains to adapt. The studio eventually pinpointed Madame Web as another hero worthy of their own movie.
Development on Madame Web began in 2019 when Sony hired Morbius writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to pen the script. It was then announced in 2020 that Jessica Jones director S.J. Clarkson would be at the helm of Sony’s first female-led Marvel movie.
With COVID-19 dramatically altering the studio’s plans for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, it wasn’t surprising that development on Madame Web became very quiet. That changed in a big way recently when reports surfaced that Dakota Johnson was in talks to lead the movie.
