My belief is that Waze is best used alongside another navigation app. But as Apple Maps has continued to add Waze-style features, I’ve found myself relying on it less and less. The lackluster support for EV features doesn’t help the situation, either.
Google Maps
Google Maps offers several features for EV drivers, but not at the level of Apple Maps or some other apps on the market. For example, Google Maps in CarPlay does not support electric vehicle routing. The app does not have access to your vehicle’s battery data and will not direct you to EV chargers during a long drive.
Google Maps offers a feature that selects the most efficient routes for electric vehicles. The app will ask you to select your vehicle’s “engine type” and you can select “electric” from a list of options. Google Maps will then select the routes that are the most energy efficient, while also considering traffic and other data points.
Best Route Planner
If you’re an EV driver and haven’t tried the Better Route Planner, commonly referred to as ABRP, you’re missing out. It is a powerful routing app and service for EV owners that offers more detail and control over your route than any other option on the market. I have yet to find any application that creates plans as accurately as ABRP, and none that offers the same level of control as ABRP.
ABRP allows you to select your car model, enter your destination and get a complete travel plan including charging stops, total charge time, total trip time and more. You can use the app as your main navigation interface via CarPlay, allowing you to see your plan in real time. This may take into account changes, traffic and other factors that may affect your itinerary and data plan.
Chargepoint
ChargePoint is similar to Electrify America in that its app focuses on its own network of chargers. So many of the same features that are available on the Electrify America app for its chargers are also available on ChargePoint for its network: find nearby chargers, filter those locations, add chargers to favorites, and more.
ChargePoint also offers a similar “Start Charging” button for its network of chargers via CarPlay. The app will contact the charger, start a session, and then prompt you to connect the car. Charging will then begin without any further interaction from you.
Electrify America
Electrify America is the largest alternative to the Tesla Supercharger network, with nearly 800 charging stations across the United States. The company offers a CarPlay app that makes it easy to find nearby Electrify America charging stations; the app can also direct you directly to these charging stations.
In addition to helping you find charging stations, the Electrify America app also provides some information about these stations. This includes things like the number of chargers available, charging speed, connector types available, pricing, downtime charges, and more. For most of these things, filtering options are also available. For example, you can filter nearby charging stations to show only those chargers that meet a certain charging rate threshold.
